Be The Breath: Six Breaths, Three Cycles, One Clear Mind
How to Use the CARCAR Breathing Technique to Create Clarity, Calmness, And Control — In 90 Seconds
Important Things First - Why CARCAR? The CARCAR technique—an acronym for Curiosity, Awareness, Recognition, Connectivity, Action, and Reflection—follows the logic of how your mind naturally works. Each step aligns with the natural, logical thinking process, much like the chapters in a story or solving a problem. Instead of drifting aimlessly from thought to thought, you’ll channel your attention through these six breathing steps three times to convert mental chaos into clarity. Additionally, it provides a structure, a breathing system, to enhance your focus.
Your Investment In Yourself: Before we begin, please understand that after some practice, everything below will take you only about 90 seconds to reset your mind and create clarity, calmness, and control.
Your Return On Thought: You can do more than escape a world overloaded with constant digital pings and mental chatter — you can control it. Instead of drowning in subversive thoughts and distractions, you’ll transform them into clarity and calm. Your yield will be more than good, more than great — it will be beyond exponential.
I will share the CARCAR Breathing Technique and the simple visualization technique I use to merge the air I breathe, my thoughts, my mind, and my being into one—in seconds. Read on.

The CARCAR Breathing Method — Be The Breath
How To Use CARCAR — Six Sides, Three Cycles: You will simply breathe through the six steps of CARCAR three times. With each cycle, your mind will become calmer and more focused.
The CARCAR Breathing Method: Picture your mind as a cube: front, back, right side, left side, top, and bottom. Each surface represents the logical, sequential series of human thought.
Why - Why - Why? Why CARCAR? There is a simple reason. CARCAR promotes focus.
Focus Before Flow: Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, the father of flow, explains focus promotes flow by creating an environment where distractions are minimized, allowing for deep concentration on a task. CARCAR is a tool to enhance your concentration. As a result, your attention is optimized and you enter the flow state.
What Are The Six Sides? These are the six sequential steps; Curiosity, Awareness, Recognition, Connectivity, Action, and Reflection. Imagine your mind as a cube, each face representing one sequential step towards integrating focusing, calm, clarity, and relaxation. You systematically breathe with a focus on each side of your mind.

Another Reason — Structure #1: Imagine making Jello. Initially, the Jello is without form, but by supplying a framework, structure, the Jello can solidify in the predefined shape. CARCAR provides a structured system for consistently guiding your breathing.
Another Reason — Structure #2: CARCAR provides a logical mental structure. The repetition of Curiosity, Awareness, Recognition, Connectivity, Action, and Reflection impacts your thought process. It is constantly 'top-of-mind' when problem-solving or considering actions to initiate.
You will become a finely tuned, flawless, perfect engine.
Get Your Motor Running: Here we go — The first CAR of CARCAR:
Curiosity — Front: First, breathe in as if breathing only through your forehead. Feel the air enter and leave through your forehead. As you breathe, solely focus on the word and concept of curiosity. Curiosity represents the questions you have. Curiosity is your mental flashlight shining into all the corners of your mind, helping you spot the good, the odd, and the unexpected. As you breathe through your forehead, imagine you are oxygenating and fueling curiosity.
Awareness — Right: Second, breathe in as if breathing only through the right side of your head, your right temple area. Feel the air enter and leave through your temple. Feel the air enter and leave through the right side of your mind as if that is where you usually breathe. As you breathe, solely focus on the word and concept of awareness. Awareness follows curiosity, which allows your mind to expand and explore. You’re oxygenating your ability to pay attention.
Recognition — Back: Third, breathe in as if breathing only through the back of your head. Feel the air enter and leave through the back of your mind as if that is where you usually breathe. As you breathe, solely focus on the word and concept of recognition. Recognition occurs after you become aware; you understand what to look for and recognize. After you’re aware, you begin to realize what matters. You see patterns and understand what to keep and what to let go. As you breathe through the back of your mind, imagine you are oxygenating and fueling recognition.
We will continue with the second CAR step.
Connectivity — Left: Fourth, breathe in as if breathing only through the left side of your head, your left temple area. Feel the air enter and leave through your temple. Feel the air enter and leave through the left side of your mind as if that is where you usually breathe. As you breathe, solely focus on the word and concept of connectivity. Connectivity happens after recognition, and you wonder how things are related. Now that you recognize important ideas connect them. See how thoughts link together, forming a map of understanding. As you breathe through your left temple, imagine you are oxygenating and fueling awareness.
Action — Bottom: Fifth, breathe in as if breathing only through the underside of your head, beneath your chin. Feel the air enter and leave through this area. Feel the air enter and leave your mind as if that is where you usually breathe. Capture your insights. Turn them into something tangible—even a small step is progress. Action transforms your newfound clarity into momentum. As you breathe, solely focus on the word and concept of action. Action happens after connectivity as you merge and relate the connections you thought of, became aware of, and recognized. Your mind continues to expand and explore. As you breathe through the underside of your mind, imagine you are oxygenating and fueling action.
Reflection — Top: Sixth, breathe in as if breathing only through the top of your head, above your chin. Feel the air enter and leave through this area. Feel the air enter and leave your mind as if that is where you usually breathe. As you breathe, solely focus on the word and concept of reflection. Reflection happens after action as you become aware of the consequences and outcomes of your actions. Look back at what you’ve done and learned. Reflection cements your growth and sets the stage for the next improvement cycle. As you breathe through the top of your mind, imagine you are oxygenating and fueling reflection.
Next, we repeat the CARCAR breathing above through three distinct and impactful cycles.
What Are The Three Cycles? Each cycle is crafted to help you relax and systematically immerse yourself more deeply into breathing. Run through these steps three times. The first pass is all about visualizing. The second is about feeling. The third is about becoming the breath.
Body Scan, Body Dive, Body Immersion: One way to imagine this is to consider the first cycle as a "body scan," where you examine the surface parts of your mind. The next is a "body dive," where you go deeper. The third way is to view the third cycle, the "body immersion," as a merging of the scan and your being.
Another way to envision this process is “raindrop, river, ocean.”
This entire process can be completed in about 60-90 seconds. Imagine that just one minute can return you to the center.
Here are the three cycles:
The First Cycle — Visualize The Breath: The above was the first of three cycles. You envisioned breathing all six sides of your mind. About 30 seconds of intense focus, resulting in calm and clarity.
The Second Cycle — Feel The Breath: Next, we repeat the CARCAR breathing, this time feeling yourself breathing. It is much like the often-used example of holding a lemon, cutting it, biting it, and feeling the lemon tartness. You simply (easy for me to say) feel your breathing as if it were super cold air on a winter's day. You notice not only the breathing but also the texture and feeling of the cold air.
The Third Cycle — Be The Breath: This is the final step, where you become the breath itself. At first, this may feel strange or even impossible, but trust the process. Once you have practiced the first two cycles and settled into the rhythm of CARCAR, you’ll find it easier to picture yourself as not just breathing the air but existing as it—one with the flow that passes in and out of your mind. I will discuss this in detail in the following section, but conceptually, you become the air you breathe.
I became fascinated when I read about a mindfulness technique that observed a candle burning and suggested you focus on the flame. It flickers, then you flicker.
Here Is What I Experimented With: I then tested many different 'techniques' that attempted to be the flame instead of just focusing on it. Ultimately, that resulted in using breath as the focal point.
How Can I? I asked myself, "How can I merge the air, my breath, and my mind into one cohesive unit.
Three Visualizations: Here are three visualization techniques that I found to be very useful. They may work for you, or they may provide the impetus for you to create a method that works for you:
Needle And Thread: Imagine a gentle needle, attached to air, entering your mind, pulling oxygen inside your head, and then connecting everything as it passes through.
Surfing The Wave: I surfed for decades and used this mental technique for about a year. Imagine a large wave rising and flowing towards you (oxygen) imagine paddling at the same speed as the wave and riding the wave (breathing) deep into your mind. I effortlessly rode the wave as the oxygen flowed through my mind. It was good, but I didn't feel it was totally integrated.
Diving Into A Flowing River: I currently use this visualization method. It's fast, effective, realistic, and works... for me. It may be your method as well. Imagine standing on a riverbank and diving into gentle, sun-warmed water. In this moment, you become the river. You feel the currents as if they are your breath. The water’s flow is your mind’s flow. You and the river merge, moving forward as one. You are no longer an onlooker; you are connected in this moving world of water. You breathe as the river breathes.
Everything, Everywhere, All At Once: The water symbolizes the air, the breath, the mind, and the self. The water and I don't require acknowledgment or recognition; we are simply one. We are each other.
This is how I visualize the concept of "Be The Breath."
The point of these visualizations is simple: to remind yourself that “you” and the “breath” are not separate. When you reach this state, calm spreads inside you. Distractions fade. You’re no longer just inhaling oxygen; you’re immersing yourself in focus, clarity, and understanding.
Bonus: I use a specific evidence-based auditory app with a particular soundtrack. Learn more about this app
What I Discovered: It wasn't necessarily about emptying my mind.
The Vulcan Mind Meld: It became about merging with my mind. Instead of treating your thoughts as intruders or strangers, you acknowledge them, connect them, shape them, and then let them pass. In doing so, you find stillness in motion, like a calm swimmer gliding through a current rather than fighting it.
I Know, I Know, I Know... It seems like a lot.
Do You Have A Minute? The three cycles of CARCAR, with just a bit of practice, take around 60-90 seconds. And, because you become so focused and immersed, you are unaware of time.
And once you get the hang of it, the sense of peace, focus, and direction you gain will far outweigh the effort.
Why Use CARCAR? Because it's:
Simple: No gadgets, no apps, no monthly subscription, no equipment, no complicated instructions. Just you and your breath and a willingness to use your mind to pause and breathe with awareness. It's as basic — and essential — as drinking water.
Logically Structured: Whether deciphering a challenging problem, exploring a new topic, or evaluating an opportunity, the mental journey almost always follows the sequence: Curiosity, Awareness, Recognition, Connectivity, Action, and Reflection. CARCAR aligns and syncs that path directly onto your breath.
Relatable: You’re already doing these steps unconsciously. CARCAR just brings them into focus, letting you direct them intentionally. CARCAR just makes it conscious. It's like spotlighting a mental dance you've been doing all along and then learning the steps so you can perform it on cue.
Memorable: Two identical 'hard' syllables—CAR/CAR. That's it. Think of CARCAR like a mantra you can't forget, even if you tried. Easy to do, hard to forget.
Repeatable: It doesn't matter where you are—lying in bed, stuck in traffic, pacing before a big meeting—CARCAR works the same way every time. No guesswork and no advanced settings. Just breathe and reset.
Fast: Got a minute? Perfect. A single minute can transform your headspace.
The Why Behind The Why—Connecting The Thoughts: In the end, CARCAR is about reclaiming your mental territory. Instead of feeling pushed around by random thoughts and frantic notifications, you stand steady at the center of your mind. This technique aligns with how your brain naturally cycles through ideas, making them feel familiar — even if they’re brand new.
It's A Skill: Over time, you’ll realize this isn’t a hack or a trick — it’s a skill that helps you navigate your life with greater awareness, purpose, and calm.
By turning breathing into a guided journey, you can steer your mind in your chosen direction. That’s why CARCAR exists. It’s a blueprint to help you breathe as a reflex and a deliberate act of self.
Tip: The CARCAR technique is essentially an anchor, guiding you using structure. Typically, I only use the word associations (Curiosity, Awareness, Recognition, Connectivity, Action, and Reflection) during the first cycle as a springboard, connecting the physical world to my mind. For the subsequent two cycles, I focus purely on the sensation and merging of breathing.
Tip: If I don’t achieve a sense of immersion, I simply repeat until I do.
Be The Breath.
