First, Many People Will Assume This Is An Article On Binaural Beats: Well, it is… and it isn’t. What this essay is really about is recognizing that you can, in fact, improve your thoughts. Binaural beats are simply another tool in your cognitive toolbox.
Second, Let’s Determine Just Who Is In Charge Of Your Brain Waves: The answer is you are, if you take the actions to be in charge. Your brain, your mind, and your thoughts can be like an unruly teenager, and if you fail to take action, they’re in charge. Is that what you want?
Your thoughts don’t control you unless you allow them to. Your thoughts are like an unruly teenage boy who recently acquired a car, a new computer designed for gaming, and a job that provides him with just enough financial independence.
In order to be successful with his newfound freedom though, the teenager needs structure and boundaries, just like your thoughts do. Unleashing him into the world with no rules or confines is a recipe for disaster. In order to maintain control, you’ll need to become your own mental maestro.
But what does that mean? Let me explain, and let’s introduce you to your own…

Mental Maestro Directing Binaural Beats
Let The Music Play: You enter the grand music hall, eager for the symphony.
This Sound Is Beastly: The orchestra warms up with many instruments sounding at once, producing disjointed sounds. It sounds like the purported Beatles album where if you play one of the songs backwards, you hear, “Paul is dead.” You think, “I am going to be dead if I have to listen to that all evening. How is a beautiful symphony going to come from this noise… this chaos?”
Control The Head, Control The Beast: Suddenly, the maestro appears, looks over all the musicians, and they all look to the maestro or conductor. The random notes cease, the musicians pause, the hall becomes quiet. The maestro simply, lightly taps the baton, and order regains control.
A One, And A Two… With another guiding motion, the maestro pauses, then points, then directs the symphony to begin. A glorious harmony is created. “Ahh,” you think, “This is what I came to hear.”
Hey! Who’s In Charge? This is the paradox. You think someone or something else is in control. It’s not. You are in control, just as the maestro is in control of the symphony. The musicians are like your random thoughts, your unguided emotions, your aimless wanderings. They do what they want, when they want, how they want. Everything is out-of-sync.
You Are Your Own Mental Maestro: Then suddenly you realize, “These are my thoughts. My emotions. I am the one in control!”
When you realize this, you become consciously and actively in control of your chaotic thoughts, your own untamed musicians. By taking control, you assume the role of your own mental maestro.

Now, back to our regularly scheduled program! Today, the topic is binaural (bi-noral) beats, another handy tool to have in your mind when it comes to thought improvement.
Just What Are Binaural Beats?
Binaural beats are an auditory illusion that occurs when two tones of slightly different frequencies are played separately into each ear. The brain integrates the two tones, producing the sensation of a single tone that pulsates in amplitude at a frequency equal to the difference between the frequencies of the two tones.
The Difference Is In The Difference: For example, if a 300 Hz tone is played into the left ear and a 310 Hz tone is played simultaneously into the right ear, the brain will produce the sensation of a 10 Hz tone that waxes and wanes in loudness (Goodin et al., 2012).
What Are The Benefits of Binaural Beats? Binaural beats have been purported to provide a variety of benefits, including reducing anxiety, enhancing cognition, decreasing depressive symptoms, improving attention and memory performance, as well as physiological effects such as increased parasympathetic drive.
Are Binaural Beats Effective? But what does the scientific evidence say about their effectiveness? This review examines the research that has been conducted on binaural beats over the past several decades.
“Lane et al. applied binaural beats at beta (16 and 24 Hz) and theta/delta (1.5 and 4 Hz) ranges for 30 min throughout a psychomotor vigilance task. The authors reported that beats in the beta range were associated with a less negative mood (see above) and improved performance in a vigilance task” (Chaieb et al., 2015).
“Our meta-analysis adds to the growing evidence that binaural-beat exposure is an effective way to affect cognition over and above reducing anxiety levels and the perception of pain without prior training, and that the direction and the magnitude of the effect depends upon the frequency used, time under exposure, and the moment in which the exposure takes place” (Garcia-Argibay et al., 2019).
“Exposure to beta-frequency binaural beats yielded a greater proportion of correctly recalled words and a higher sensitivity index d' in recognition tasks” (Garcia-Argibay et al., 2019).
“In addition, the beta-frequency beats were associated with less negative mood. Results suggest that the presentation of binaural auditory beats can affect psychomotor performance and mood. This technology may have applications for the control of attention and arousal and the enhancement of human performance” (Lane et al., 1998).
What Are The Different Brainwave Types And Their Impacts?
Delta Waves: Delta waves are like cruise ships: they roll slowly like ocean swells and are associated with deep, dreamless sleep. Oscillating at 1–4 hertz, these are the slowest brainwaves, ushering us into tranquil unconsciousness, so the body can renew itself. Without delta wave restoration, our waking hours become muddled and stressed.
Theta Waves: Theta waves are like a train, rhythmically chugging along, taking you on a journey within your imagination. Theta waves bring daydreams and light sleep, pulsing at 4–7 Hertz. As we drift into slumber, our brains pass through this theta valley, conjuring visions and childhood memories in vivid snapshots. Meditators also reach this state of relaxed focus and inward thinking.
Alpha Waves: Alpha waves are like a sports car – fast yet smooth, allowing you to effortlessly race into a state of calm focus. These waves chime along at 8–12 Hertz, emerging when we close our eyes in quiet relaxation or meditation. Without sensory input, alpha waves wash over the brain, leaving awareness clear and calm. Tasks become effortless in this restful yet alert state.
Beta Waves: Beta waves are like a fighter jet, blazing fast, propelling your mind into intense focus and concentration. Beta waves zip by at 12–40 hertz, generated when we're actively thinking, problem-solving, or focusing. This rapid rhythm jolts our brains into top gear for learning, analyzing, and assessing our environment. Too many beta waves though can lead to stress, anxiety, and restlessness.
Across this spectrum, from slow delta to busy beta, our neural symphony rises and falls, conducting consciousness through various stages of awareness. Adjusting these brainwave patterns can profoundly impact our sleep, moods, and performance.

Binaural Beats for Anxiety
If you are like me, I know what you’re thinking: “Hey, I don’t get anxiety. I give anxiety!” The following is for those “normal” folks.
Binaural Beats and the Effects on Mood and Anxiety: Several studies have found that binaural beats in the alpha frequency range (8-13 Hz) can reduce anxiety levels and promote relaxation. A randomized controlled trial found that 30 minutes of 10 Hz binaural beats significantly reduced anxiety and increased relaxation compared to placebo audio. Similar effects on anxiety were found in patients preparing to undergo surgery. However, a recent meta-analysis concluded that the anxiety-reducing effects are not consistent across all studies, indicating more research is needed.
There is also some evidence that binaural beats can decrease depressive symptoms. One study found that listening to binaural beats in the theta frequency range (4-7 Hz) for 20 minutes daily can significantly reduce depression after 4 weeks. The effects may occur because low-frequency binaural beats increase dopamine production and alter hemispheric asymmetry in the brain. However, larger randomized trials are needed to confirm these preliminary findings.
Binaural Beats for Focus
What Are the Effects of Binaural Beats on Attention and Memory? Several studies have investigated whether binaural beats can improve attention and memory performance. A review found that beta-frequency (14-30 Hz) binaural beats improved attention and processing speed on vigilance tasks requiring sustained attention. Studies also show that exposure to theta-frequency (4-7 Hz) binaural beats before memory tasks can improve recall performance (7, 8). The benefits are thought to occur because theta rhythms are associated with memory encoding. However, more research is needed using larger sample sizes to verify these effects.
We Got The Beat: You may have seen movies where soldiers are marching in-step to the beat of a rhythmic drum. That drum beat is similar to how binaural beats help you perform tasks. Another way to visualize beats is similar to a magnifying glass focusing all your brainwaves toward greater concentration (Basu & Banerjee, 2022).
Long Train Running: Studies show that just 15 minutes of listening can quiet the mind's tendency to wander, keeping thought trains aligned on their tracks (Kirk et al., 2019).
Bend Me, Shape Me: Binaural beats can also result in enhanced cognitive flexibility (Hommel et al., 2016).
Practice Makes Perfect: Not surprisingly, with persistent and consistent exposure, binaural beats increase cognitive flexibility, boost working memory, and help minds maintain attention amid chaos (Basu & Banerjee, 2022).
Binaural Beats for Healing
Are There Any Physiological Effects of Binaural Beats? Binaural beats appear capable of altering psychophysical measures such as heart rate and skin conductance levels. Listening to high-frequency binaural beats increased heart rate variability and parasympathetic activation in one study. Increased parasympathetic drive could explain the relaxation and anxiety reduction associated with alpha- and theta-frequency binaural beats.
Lower The Dose: There is initial evidence to suggest binaural beats can help us heal. When a group of subjects who experienced chronic pain listened to binaural beats, there was a reduction in the intensity of perceived pain, a concurrent reduction in stress, which then resulted in lower needs for pain medications (Gkolias et al., 2020).
Changes in brain electrical activity have also been observed, with increased hemispheric synchronization and changes in EEG amplitudes and frequency in response to binaural beats. This offers insight into the neurological mechanisms underlying their effects. However, the physiological effects have not been studied comprehensively.
Binaural Beats for Sleep
A Mother Singing A Lullaby To Her Baby: Binaural beats may impact our sleep patterns. Like a lullaby for the brain, binaural beats sing you to sleep by mimicking a frequency similar to that of delta waves. Delta waves are the most prominent frequency when we sleep deeply.
Promising data exists to suggest that when listening to certain types of binaural beats, people can improve their ability to fall asleep and also their sleep quality (Dabiri et al., 2022).
Gooooaaaaal! A study on soccer players listening to binaural beats ranging from 2 Hz to 8 Hz reported improved quality of sleep, less sleepiness, and increased ease of waking up (Sleep Foundation).
You Are Now Falling Deep Asleep: Another study using binaural beats at a delta frequency of 3 Hz showed that these beats induced delta activity in the brain and lengthened stage three sleep. Stage three sleep is deep sleep and important for feeling refreshed in the morning (Sleep Foundation).

Which Binaural Beats Frequency Range Appears to be Most Effective?
An exploratory pilot study examined the effects of different binaural beat frequencies on mood, memory and cognition in nine participants over four weeks. The results showed that in the 40Hz gamma frequency group, there were improvements in mean cognitive scores (from 75% to 85%) and mean memory scores (87% to 95%), with statistical significance (Brain Informatics). All groups showed an overall improvement in mood scores, with 40Hz showing a stronger correlation between sessions.
But What Are The Negatives? While evidence for the efficacy of binaural beats remains preliminary and mixed, most experts agree that the risk of side effects is low (Psychology Today).
Work In Progress: It’s important to note that more research is needed to fully understand the effectiveness of binaural beats. However, some small studies have shown promising results in using binaural beats for better sleep, reducing anxiety, and improving mood.
Considerations and Limitations: Despite limitations like small sample size, the study provides evidence that 40Hz binaural beat stimulation may have positive effects on cognition, memory and mood. Further research with larger samples is warranted to confirm the neurological effects of binaural beats, especially at 40Hz. Overall, this initial study is promising for 40Hz gamma frequency binaural beats to potentially improve key cognitive functions and mood.
Conclusion - Promising
In summary, preliminary research indicates that binaural beats may have beneficial effects on mood, performance, and physiology. However, more rigorous large-scale studies are needed to replicate these findings and clarify optimal protocols for their use. Binaural beats hold promise as a simple, inexpensive way to alter brain activity and produce positive effects, but more research is needed before definitive conclusions can be made about their effectiveness.
