Deja Vu - The Power Of Inverse Visualization
Déjà Vu In The Queue: I was in the checkout line at our local grocery store. I noticed the approximately young female cashier's name tag said Deja, and I thought it was an unusual name.
Feeling Blue: Sometimes, <"All the freakin' time.">> I can be a bit of a smartass. I was trying to create a play on words or something funny about her name.
I Had No Points Of Vu: I mentally did the déjà vu, jamais vu, and presque vu analysis. Nothing. I couldn't come up with any past, current, or future twist.
Crowdsourcing: I gave up and decided to simply ask Deja what people say to her when they learn her name. She replied, "Most often it is something stupid like, 'Oh, just like déjà vu,' and then they laugh."
Finally, A Different Point Of Vu: I thought about that lame response as Deja handed me my receipt. I thought she had done this motion thousands of times before. I tried to look at the interaction from her point of view.
Been There, Done That: I said to her, "I have an idea. This is what you say next time someone makes a lame comment <Like the one you are about to make?">> on your name - just pause, look them in the eyes as if you are surprised, and say, 'You've said that to me before!'"
She laughed. <"Don't all women laugh at you?">>
You have a better opportunity to understand a person when you consider things from their point of view.
<This story? It's real déjà poo!">>
