The Before Rules - Part One: How to Skip Hard Work And Leap Over Smart Work And Go Directly to Achievement
Part One - Tipping Points Transact, Fulcrums Transform
Success is often the result of consistent effort via a constant stream of tipping points (transactional and foundational) or a series of intelligent, strategic maneuvers provided by fulcrums (transformative and efficient).
But, let's be honest: both still require significant work and often a lot of trial and error.
What If? Ask yourself, what if instead of WORKING harder or smarter, there was a better way?
What If? What if you could apply a different, more effective, more powerful tactic to achieve success?
What If? What if, instead of WORKING, you INVESTED in yourself?
What If? What if there were a systematic, repeatable shortcut leading directly to your desired outcome?
Is This A Cheat Code? No! It is a code—without the cheating part.
The Ropes To Skip And The Ropes To Know: In this essay, I’ll discuss how to skip the hard work (transactional efforts) and jump over the smart work (transformational actions) stages and then, in the following essay, go directly to the Before Rules (transcendent tactics).
Let's begin... at the beginning.
Important Things First — Of Tipping Points, Fulcrums, And Before Rules - An Overview: Progress and success are accomplished through three distinct methods.
Tipping Points (Transactional): Tipping points are critical thresholds where small, consistent, accumulated changes lead to a sudden change. This is hard work—putting in effort to get direct results. It's like reaching a tipping point: you can achieve it if you work hard enough. Transactional work is in your past.
Fulcrums (Transformative): Conversely, fulcrums create immediate change through effort on a single strategic point. This is the smart work—using your experience to leverage your efforts. Like using a fulcrum, you focus your energy where it counts most. Transformative is in your present.
The Before Rules (Transcendent): The Before Rules go beyond the simple external actions of tipping points and fulcrums to focus on powerful, intrinsic tactics to achieve your desired outcomes. This approach combines insight, foresight, desired outcomes, and specialized tactics. You understand and anticipate challenges before they arise and implement systems in advance. It's not just about working harder or smarter; it's about intuitively predicting what comes next and taking steps to ensure a successful outcome. Transcendent actions impact your future.

[Hard Work] Transactional Tipping Points: When Past, Small Changes Lead to Big Shifts In the Present
Understanding Tipping Points: Tipping points are seemingly insignificant moments or actions that accumulate over time, eventually leading to significant change. They are the proverbial "straw that broke the camel's back."
In personal development, tipping points occur when the compound effect of habits - good or bad - becomes visible. For example, consistently eating an extra cookie each day might seem insignificant until it suddenly leads to noticeable weight gain. Conversely, adding an extra day at the gym each week can eventually result in significant fitness improvements.
What Are The Characteristics Of Tipping Points? Tipping points often have common elements. Let's look at a typical example, like unintentional weight gain:
Externally-Driven: Often influenced by external conditions or environments rather than internal factors. For instance, the proximity of sodas and unhealthy snacks makes mindless eating much more accessible.
Consistency Over Intensity: Those that build up gradually over time rather than sudden events. This might happen when a person eats slightly more calories than they burn daily, leading to weight gain.
Cumulative And Compound Effect: Small, incremental actions will have a cumulative impact over time. Each extra calorie consumed gets stored as fat, gradually increasing body weight.
Critical Threshold: Accumulated changes lead to a sudden, often irreversible transformation. At a certain point, weight gain may become noticeable, leading to the need to purchase new clothes, health issues, and/or a lifestyle change, marking the tipping point.
"If you are persistent, you will get it. If you are consistent, you will keep it." — Harvey Mackay
Here Is A Tipping Point Story — A Thousand Taps: Consider the following true story.
The I-35W Mississippi River Bridge: On August 1, 2007, one thousand feet of the I-35W bridge in Minneapolis collapsed, killing 13 people and injuring 145. This tragedy resulted from many small stresses that accumulated over time, including weather, age, and increased traffic.
One Second It's Good, The Next Second It's Broken: In this scenario, the tipping point occurred when the bridge's age, the total weight of the traffic and construction equipment, the cumulative impact of weather, a lack of proper maintenance, and structural deficiencies surpassed its capacity, causing it to collapse. This example demonstrates how seemingly insignificant and ostensibly unrelated events, combined with gradual changes, can build up over time and culminate in a critical moment of failure.
In short, many tipping points can merge to produce one outcome.
Let's move on to fulcrums.
[Fulcrums] Transformational Fulcrums — Leveraging the Present
What Is A Fulcrum? A fulcrum is a pivotal point around which a lever moves; even small efforts can create significant movement. Unlike tipping points, fulcrums are about precision and timing.
"Big doors swing on small hinges." — W. Clement Stone
What Are The Characteristics Of Fulcrums? Fulcrums often have common elements. These include:
Always Ready—Instantaneous Effect, But Requires Activation: While tipping points accumulate, a fulcrum requires action. Consider using a bottle opener to remove a soda top.
Optimized Location — Strategic Placement: Fulcrums derive power from precise positioning, enabling maximum leverage with minimal effort. Imagine a door hinge: even a slight push can move a heavy door.
Intrinsic Control: Unlike tipping points, which external forces can influence, fulcrums are often powered by internal choices and deliberate actions, giving you direct influence over your desired outcomes. Tools like scissors demonstrate how even a small hand movement can effectively cut through tough materials.
Effort Amplification: A well-placed fulcrum can transform a minor input into a substantial result, amplifying effort and maximizing efficiency. A crowbar is a powerful demonstration of how leverage works. The fulcrum can lift or move a much heavier object by applying a small force at one end while resting the crowbar against something - the fulcrum.
Leverage Over Force: Strategic use of minimal effort can achieve significant outcomes (like someone contributing a little bit of money monthly to their retirement account). A nutcracker is an example illustrating how a small force applied at the lever's end can easily crack the tough shell of a nut.

Here Is A Fulcrum Story—A Single Tap: Consider this often-shared example.
The Power of Knowing Where to Tap—A Story of Precision and the Fulcrum: A factory's essential machine broke down, halting production. The owner called in an expert to repair it. After carefully examining the machine, she gave a single tap in the right spot, fixing the machine instantly. The owner questioned the cost when presented with a single-line item invoice for $1,000. "But that only took you five minutes and one tap to solve!"
The expert refined her invoice to read:
For the tap: $1
For knowing where to tap: $999
Total: $1,000

The Value Of The Fulcrum: This story highlights the power of the fulcrum: the precise point where minimal effort produces maximum results. The expert's value lay not in the physical act but in her knowledge of where to apply it. It emphasizes how strategic action can lead to disproportionate outcomes.
How Does The DIKW Concept Compare To Transactional Tipping Points, Transformational Fulcrums, And Transcendent Before Rules? Let's use the Data-Information-Knowledge-Wisdom (DIKW) model to understand the transactional, transformational, and transcendent processes.
Data: Imagine data as scattered puzzle pieces—these are your transactional tipping points. They're the raw facts and small efforts you gather. On their own, they don't make much sense.
Information: When you start to organize these pieces, they become information. This is the transformational stage, like using a lever (fulcrum) to lift something heavy. You begin to see patterns and connections. You're working smarter by assembling the pieces into a meaningful picture.
Knowledge + Wisdom: At the transcendent stage, you attain and combine knowledge and wisdom. Here, you gain a comprehensive view, a profound understanding, and the ability to anticipate proactively. You don’t just see the complete picture; you do more - you understand it and then create it. This is where the Before Rules come into play. They guide your actions ahead of time, making wise decisions inevitable.
Bonus — Sometimes Tipping Points Or Fulcrums Can Be Fleeting: The following is a frequently encountered situation that may only sometimes be acknowledged as a decisive tipping point or an impactful fulcrum.
The 'Shooting Thought': Imagine you've been working on a challenge or opportunity for weeks. Then, one day, you overhear a snippet of a sidewalk conversation between two people you'll never see again, read a quote intended for a different situation, or learn about something unrelated. Yet, immediately, you realize how this sparks the idea that will solve your dilemma.
It's that 'eureka' moment when everything clicks into place. You have the power to recognize and create these 'Shooting Thoughts' that can lead to your success. Click here to learn more about how to not only capture Shooting Thoughts but to create Shooting Thoughts.
Shaping The Future: What if the secret to effortless achievement lies not in doing more or being smarter but in employing effective tactics?
I discuss the concept using the Before Rules as tactics in Part Two.
The Why Behind The Why — Connecting The Thoughts: Understanding tipping points and fulcrums is crucial for success. Tipping points generally occur from past actions, but their impact is often immediate.
Fulcrums, however, empower you to create immediate impact through strategic, internally driven actions.
So Far, So Good. Now, Think Less, Achieve More: Next, I will discuss the Power of Before Rules. Building upon the concepts of tipping points and fulcrums, the Before Rules create a proactive and strategic approach to achieving goals more efficiently and effectively.
The Why Behind The Why — Connecting The Thoughts
The Spark Within: Now, it gets interesting. Instead of letting tipping points and fulcrums happen to us, how do we impact them? What do we do with this knowledge, and how do we apply it to our lives to benefit ourselves in all we do?
In Part Two, I will introduce the concept of the Before Rules. This concept discusses transitioning from simple external actions, such as tipping points and fulcrums, to proactively creating and designing effective mental models. I will present specific and effective tactics to help you achieve your desired outcomes.
